Woolston Sewage Treatment Works
Mechanical design, manufacture and installation of the Primary and Secondary Works packages - from initial conception until completion.
The Brief
The project involved providing a temporary treatment facility to ensure continuous sewage processing while phased demolition took place on site. The package included installing pumps, pipework, and mechanical ancillaries to maintain full treatment operations throughout the transition. Following this, Woodhams was contracted to design, manufacture, and construct the new primary process works for the upgraded sewage treatment plant, all while keeping the temporary facility fully functional to avoid any treatment downtime.
The Solution
One of the major challenges was restricted site access and limited storage space. To overcome this, Woodhams established a local off-site facility dedicated to manufacturing and assembly.
Bespoke mechanical components such as pump skids, steel structures, stainless steel distribution chambers, and pipework were created at the off-site facility . This approach allowed us to pre-assemble major elements before delivery, providing a ‘just-in-time’ installation capability that maximised efficiency and reduced waste. By only transporting materials as required, we were able to minimise on-site congestion and lower overall project costs.
Throughout the project, programme dates evolved due to changing site conditions. Our team remained flexible and proactive, adapting schedules to maintain momentum and avoid unnecessary costs. We placed great emphasis on clear communication, holding weekly meetings internally and with the client to ensure transparency and progress updates through both written and verbal channels.
The Result
The primary works are now fully operational and performing successfully. Following the completion of this phase, Woodhams was awarded additional contracts for the Storm and Sludge areas, a reflection of the confidence and trust our client, 4Delivery, has in our team.
